Abaddon and Apollyon

We have always been taught that Abaddon and Apollyon in Revelation 9: 11 is Satan because it says he is the king and the angel of the bottomless pit.  In Revelation 9:1 the Bible says the key to the bottomless pit was given to this angel.  Revelation 1:18 says that Jesus has the keys to hell and death.  Therefore; Jesus is the angel/king of the bottomless pit, as it also says in Revelation 20:1&2 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.  And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,.

The names Abaddon and Apollyon do mean to destroy, to abolish, to throw down, to slay and to cut off, but the connotations of the words and phrases are so negative that we have trouble seeing the positive side of them.  Did not Jesus come to destroy the ability of our spirits being slain?  Did He not abolish enmity or opposition to our Father’s commandments?  Did He not break down the middle wall between us and our Heavenly Father, Ephesians 2:14–18?  We must open our eyes and ears to what our Father’s Word is really saying.  Let us not forget that one of God's names is El Shaddai and Shaddai means destroyer, destruction, purging and chastening!

The negative connotation of the words: angel, king, locusts, scorpions, serpents, army, Abaddon, Apollyon, plagues, hurt, fire, smoke and brimstone, in Revelation chapter nine, are keeping us fearful and confused about something that was meant to comfort and enlighten us. We know that our God has not given us the spirit of fear, II Timothy 1: 7 and that He is not the author of confusion, I Corinthians 14: 33.

II Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

I Corinthians 14:33
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
