Seven Seals, Seven Trumps and Seven Vials
Once we realize that the word Revelation means “completion” in the Bible, we can understand that the seven (spiritual completeness, perfection) seals, trumps and vials are describing what Jesus Christ completed when he came down to earth and what we are to complete as His army of believers, disciples and messengers (angels).
We are told clearly that only Christ could open the book with the seven seals, Revelation 5:5, because He had prevailed over death by His resurrection. Revelation 6:1 begins the examples of what He accomplished with His coming and His instructions to His followers.
Seven Seals
The first seal is opened and a rider on a white (purity and righteousness) horse (power and strength) had a bow, Psalms 45:5. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee. A crown was given unto him, Zechariah 6:11, Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest; and he went forth conquering and to conquer, Romans 8:37, Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
Jesus Christ accomplished what was prophesied in Zechariah chapter six and now in Revelation chapter six we are to accomplish the same as the temple of God and as His army of angels. II Thess. 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
The second seal is opened and a red (fiery, fire, God’s glory and truth) horse went out to take peace from the earth by offending those who will not repent. The rider was given a great sword, (The Word of God, Truth, Jesus Christ). Matthew 10:34, Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
The third seal was opened and a black (dim, duskiness, gloominess) Joel 2:2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations., horse went out with a rider carrying balances (to hear, listen and to weigh what is being taught as truth) without hurting the oil and wine (Truth of God)!
The fourth seal was opened and a pale (sickly, greenish, as in bringing death) horse went out and Death was his name and Hell followed with him. Ezekiel 5:12 A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them. Power was given to them to kill with the sword (Word of God), hunger (for the Word of God), death (spiritually) and with the beasts (mankind’s teachings). Remember also, who has the keys to hell and death – Jesus! Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
The fifth seal was opened and the souls of those who were slain (spiritually cleansed of false teachings) for the testimony and the Word of God were under the altar. White robes (purified and mature coverings of Truth) were given to them and they were told to rest a “little season”, Revelation 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a “little season”., until their fellowservants should be killed (spiritually and or physically) as they were. Revelation 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
The sixth seal was opened and there was a great earthquake (a shake up in what the world believed). The sun, stars and moon (light/truth sources of what was being believed and taught) were darkened and dimmed by the real Truth (Jesus Christ) fulfilling the plan of salvation, with His death and resurrection. Isaiah 13:10, For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
In Revelation 6:17 it says that the “great day of His wrath IS come”. We are in that day of His wrath, since the plan of salvation has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ. The word “wrath” says it all when we understand that the word means “violent passion and desire”. That’s how our Father feels about us and wants us to repent and return to Him!
The seventh seal is opened and seven (spiritual completeness, perfection or maturity) trumpets were given to seven angels (Messengers) to sound (reverberate, disturb, shake, make waves) on the earth. Fire (truth and glory of God) was cast to the earth and there were “voices, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake” as that truth is carried on until the end.
The Seven Trumpets
The first trumpet sounded and “hail and fire, mingled with blood”, (truth that brings life or death) is cast upon the earth. The third part (three meaning divine completeness and perfection) of trees and all grass (mankind) was burnt up, (offended, disgraced, ashamed) by the truth.
Ezekiel 38:22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
The second trumpet sounded and a great mountain, (God’s people) burning with fire (truth) was cast into the sea (mankind) and a third (divine completeness and perfection) became blood, (died spiritually because they would not obey truth and repent).
Joel 3:17: So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.
The third trumpet sounded and a great star fell (came to earth) from heaven, burning as a lamp (candlestick, light source). The name of the star is Wormwood and a third of the waters (people) became wormwood, and many men spiritually died (became convicted of their sins and were resurrected as believers in Jesus Christ) because of the bitterness (conviction and self-examination) taught by God’s messengers.
Jeremiah 9:15: Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.
Jeremiah 23:15: Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.
The fourth trumpet sounded and the third part of the sun, moon and stars (light or truth sources) were darkened. The light that was being taught was darkened because of the true Light (Jesus Christ) had come and His followers are upholding that Light still to this day.
The fifth trumpet sounded and a star fell (to alight with humbleness) on the earth and was given the “key” to the bottomless pit. Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. This is Jesus Christ! Christ opens the pit with His death and resurrection and releases the smoke. (Joel 2:30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.) This is the same pillar of smoke (truth) that led to the promise land, as in the exodus of God’s people. Locusts (fast-spreading) came out of the smoke and power was given to them as scorpions have power…to sting and hurt (offend). They were not to hurt any green (having spiritual life) person, but only those without the seal of God’s truth in their minds. They could torment (same torment of the witnesses of Revelation 11:10) for five (the grace of God’s goodness) months(the word months means "become new"), however long God deems necessary to get His children to repent. Abaddon and Apollyon (Destroyer, just as El Shaddai means Destroyer) are the names in Hebrew and Greek for their king, angel of the bottomless pit, which is Jesus Christ.
The sixth trumpet sounded and the four (worldwide) angels (messengers) were loosed from the great river Euphrates (Jesus Christ, who is the river of the water of life) and prepared to slay (offend) the third (divine completeness, perfection, maturity and resurrection) of men. The number of the horsemen of God’s army is two (union, witnessing) hundred (God’s election of grace, children of promise) thousand thousand (Divine completeness and Glory of God). They wore breastplates of fire (truth, righteousness) and of jacinth (blue-royalty for their king, Jesus Christ) and brimstone (divinity). The horses (strength and power) had heads (leaders) as the heads of lions (cleansers, atoners, purgers, reconcilers) and with the fire, smoke and brimstone they do hurt those who refuse to repent.
In the days of the disclosure of the seventh trumpet the mystery of God will be finished. As John did, we must all take of the little book, (truth, wisdom, and knowledge of God’s plan) and eat it up. It does taste sweet to us, but it makes our bellies (hearts) bitter because of conviction, shame and humiliation before our Lord.
The Seven Vials
One of the most interesting things about the seven vials is that they are poured out, which always makes us think of Joel 2:28, 29. 28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. To pour out means to bestow upon someone. The seven (spiritual perfection or maturity) angels (messengers with truth) were told to go and pour out the vials of the “wrath” of God.
The word wrath means violent passion and desire. Our Father’s passion and desire for us to repent is what is being symbolically described in Revelation chapter 16.
The first angel poured out his vial and a noisome and grievous sore fell upon the people who would not repent. The truth is always noisome and grievous to those who rebel against it.
The second angel poured out his vial upon the sea (mankind) and it became as the blood of a dead man, (no spiritual life).
The third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers, and fountains of waters (mankind) and they became blood, (spiritually dead).
The fourth angel poured out his vial upon the “sun” and power was given to “him”, the bearer of light or truth, to scorch (offend or convict) with fire, (truth). Men still do not repent, but blaspheme God.
The fifth angel poured out his vial of truth upon the seat of beast, (the very powers of false teachings and unrepentant acts) and they still do not repent.
The sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates, (supposed to be God’s people) and the water (truth) is dried up, Jeremiah 50:38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols., so that the way of the kings of the east (Christians teaching the truth) is prepared. Isaiah 41:2 Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? He gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow. The devilish spirits coming from the mouth of the false prophet, the beast and the dragon, (lies and misconceptions) are gathering people together for battle against the truth.
The seventh angel poured out his vial into the air (spirits of all mankind) and the great voice from the throne of heaven says “It is done”!
Truth (Jesus Christ) has come down unto us on earth, accomplished the sacrifice ordained by our Heavenly Father, and has great desire for us to repent and to become His followers and servants of the truth.
We are told clearly that only Christ could open the book with the seven seals, Revelation 5:5, because He had prevailed over death by His resurrection. Revelation 6:1 begins the examples of what He accomplished with His coming and His instructions to His followers.
