The Great White Throne Judgment
As with most Christians, we were taught that “the great white throne judgment” in Revelation 20:11 was a future event that has not happened yet. It, actually, is a “has been, are now and will be” Revelation 1:19, event for each individual upon his death. Hebrews 9:27 & 28 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. The book of Revelation is the revealing/completion of what our Lord and Savior accomplished by His birth, death and resurrection for all mankind.
When our Lord said in John 9:39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind., and in John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. He was telling us that the plan for mankind’s salvation was about to be accomplished with His death and resurrection. We have been in the time of judgment since Christ resurrected and ascended back to the Father.
Just as with the thief on the cross, when we confess/repent of our sins, confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and that His Kingdom has come down to earth within His followers, we are in the judgment for which Christ came into the world and finished upon the cross. John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. And just as with the thief on the cross when we die our Lord will reward our judgment with His pronouncement of, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43. Jesus did not say to the thief, “Now sleep in your grave until the Great White Throne Judgment and then you shall be with me in paradise.” He was making it possible with His death and resurrection for the thief to be with Him in paradise and He made it possible for us all to be with Him in paradise at the time of each of our deaths and judgments.
So many teach that we are asleep in our graves until the Great White Throne Judgment, but how can that be? Our Savior defeated death and the grave on the cross. I Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? We have proof in God’s Holy Word that when Christ was raised from the dead all those who believed in Him as our Father’s plan of salvation (the saints) were raised also. Matthew 27:52&53 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Did these resurrect and then everyone else who dies afterward stay in the grave? They were asleep in the grave until Christ resurrected as the firstfruits. I Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. Some teach that this was a one time example, but we take it as it is written for all believers. Christ is our resurrection and when we physically die all who are judged spiritually-resurrected by our King will be with Him in paradise. Amen!
We must examine ourselves about why we want to believe that there will be some kind of great public judgment where we, of course, will receive our wonderful rewards and others who are less deserving than us will be cast into “Hell” or the “Lake of Fire”. This image brings out the lack of mercy, grace and love that we are to represent as followers of Jesus Christ. This is the part of us (the chaff of the wheat) that truly must be cast into the Lake of Fire (God’s Haven of Truth) to burn/refine us as we are molded into His likeness.
The image of literal books being opened at this “Great White Throne Judgment”, especially the Book of Life, and people being judged from these literal books and then sentenced to either burn in Hell/Lake of Fire or receiving a mansion and a gold crown is just wrongly being taught.
The "books” (messages, communications and teachings from our Teacher, Jesus Christ) are being opened (our minds being opened to wisdom and knowledge of our Lord and His teachings) now and ever since Christ brought His message to us, died and resurrected. We, all, who have not come into the “Oneness” of our Father and His Son, our Savior, must go into the Lake of Fire for refining and maturing. John 17:21,22 & 23 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
I Corinthians 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming (His coming is within His followers as they are refined and matured with Truth into His likeness).
