Michael – one of the Archangels or Jesus Christ?
The name Michael appears five times in the Bible. We were taught that Michael was a heavenly messenger (angel) sent to Daniel (Daniel 10:13, 10: 21 and 12:1) to teach him of the latter days. In truth, Michael is discussed but is not the one doing the talking.
The name Michael means " Who is assuredly God" and "Who is like God?" Hmmm? Who is and is like God? JESUS! When we teach that Michael and Jesus are one and the same, we are accused of angel worshipping (the word angel means messenger). Well, since we do worship God/Jesus Christ… and Michael is just one of the names of Christ such as Emmanuel (God with us) and Melchesidec (King of Peace or King of Righteousness)… then we are guilty. Most Christians do not stop to think how insulting it is to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, to be looking for another "Savior", named Michael, to stand for us and to do battle with Satan in some future scenario. Christ fulfilled this commission from our Heavenly Father and we need to honor and glorify His accomplishment of defeating Satan (death and sin) and bringing the Kingdom of God to us on earth. Thank you, Lord! The book of Daniel is a book of prophecies that Jesus Christ fulfilled with His birth, death and resurrection.
Some teach that because Michael says in Jude 9 (Zechariah 3:2) "The Lord rebuke thee" to Satan that this proves Michael was not Jesus Christ or He would have rebuked Satan himself. They question that in Matthew 4:10 Christ rebuked Satan so why would He not have in Jude 9. Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan:
What we are shown by our Teacher, Jesus Christ, is that, as Michael, he had not been born as the ONLY begotten son of God, the Lord of Lords, King of Kings and Prince of Peace, yet. Therefore; He had not had bestowed upon Him the power to rebuke that He had as Savior of all mankind, God in the flesh and "I and the Father are One". The same power to rebuke in His name that He bestows upon His children when they accept Him as Lord and Savior.
One of the obvious misconceptions being taught is that archangels is some category of angels. We were taught that Gabriel was an archangel also, but that is not written in the Bible. The plural form of archangel is not in the Bible. Arch means chief, captain or lord, therefore; Jesus/Michael is lord of all messengers sent from God. In Daniel 10:13 Michael is called "one of the chief princes", one means first in rank or captain, lord or king. In Daniel 8:25 he is the "Prince of princes". In Daniel 10:21, Michael is called "your prince". In Daniel 12:1, he is called "the great prince that standeth for the children". In Jude 9, he is called the archangel. In Revelation 12: 7, Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. Now who has angels? JESUS!
II Thessalonians 1: 7
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
The most amazing confirmation that Michael is another name for Jesus is in I Thessalonians 4:16 where it states that “ the Lord himself shall descend with a shout, with the voice of THE archangel, and with the trump of God...." Voice means disclosure and who disclosed and fulfilled the greatest message of all? JESUS CHRIST "and the dead in Christ shall rise first"
Angels do not have the ability to resurrect the dead; Only God who gives life has the power to restore it. John 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; Our Father gave Jesus/Michael/The Archangel the power to resurrect the dead.
Interesting sidebar..............Many biblical scholars believe that when you take the time that Zacharias (father of John the Baptist) was serving in the temple (the course of Abia) and that six months after Elisabeth conceived, Mary conceived around the end of December, and Jesus was born on September 29th. Webster's Dictionary states that "Michaelmas" is a feast celebrating the archangel Michael and that it is celebrated on September 29th!
