What is the Kingdom of God?
Many God-fearing, church-going, scripture-studying Christians cause more pain and confusion than non-believers. In Biblical ignorance they judge, condemn to hell and offer no Christ-like compassion for any who do not do exactly as they do (or as they may pretend to do).
For example, a self-proclaimed Christian lady walks up to her co-worker and states with all righteous assurance. “You know that your brother went to hell because he died drunk in that car accident.” The sister of the deceased, also a Christian, hangs her head and replies, “I guess so.” Now the sister knows that her 28 year-old brother loved the Lord with all his heart, sang songs of praise while he labored at his dangerous and backbreaking job and despised himself because he could not stop drinking, but she knows of no other response to give her co-worker.
Both these Christians are only standing on the Bible teachings that they have been taught in churches or that they have read themselves. I Corinthians 6:9 &10 and Galatians 5:19-21 are the verses that seem to state this unequivocally. These verses do state that drunkards, among other sinners, will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
What we are confused about is what the Kingdom of God is. Our teacher, Jesus Christ, teaches us that the Kingdom of God is within us and that it is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, Romans 14:17 and Luke 17:21. It is our coming into unity with our Father and His son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. It is Christ being revealed (His Coming) in us as we receive a new name (nature, character, a new knowledge, a new understanding), Revelation 2:17.
Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Drunkards and drug addicts will be the first to tell you that they have no peace or joy in how they live and that they know they are living unrighteously and, therefore, they do not have the Kingdom of God within themselves
. Is this not hell enough or do we self-righteously want them to suffer in our image of hell after death also? Be careful to study the lists in I Cor. 6:9&10 and Gal. 5:19-21, because we all are guilty of at least one or more of these offenses at some time in our own lives and we were not representing the Kingdom of God within us either.
Thank God we have a loving and compassionate Father and Savior who are the only ones who pass judgment on us all! Thank God, judgment of where we spend eternity is not left to those who would, in Biblical ignorance, pass sentences on suffering souls of more Hell, (the depths of the absence of peace, joy and glory of God)!
